About Hardware Sentry KM for PATROL

Hardware Sentry is a Knowledge Module (KM) for PATROL that natively runs on the BMC PATROL Agent. The monitored objects, their metrics and configuration are automatically integrated into the various BMC consoles.

Note for BMC PATROL Agent v11.00.00: The BMC patch Patch 1 for BMC PATROL Agent 11.0.00 must be installed to use any version of Hardware Sentry KM for PATROL. Version 11.0.00 of the PATROL Agent on Windows prevents Hardware Sentry KM for PATROL from operating properly. While apparently successfully loaded, Hardware Sentry KM for PATROL fails to start and can neither monitor the local system nor the remote systems. An error message is displayed stating that no hardware connectors are loaded and that the product needs to be re-installed.

Hardware Sentry monitors the hardware of almost any server (physical, virtual, and blade servers) and external storage device (disk arrays, fiber switches, and tape libraries) available in datacenters. Once Hardware Sentry is installed and configured for local or remote monitoring, the monitored objects and metrics and its configuration is automatically integrated into the various BMC consoles:

  • TrueSight Operations Management (in TrueSight Presentation Server)
  • TrueSight Central Monitoring Administration (CMA)
  • TrueSight Infrastructure Management
  • PATROL Console (Classic)
  • PATROL Central - Windows Edition
  • PATROL Central - Web Edition.

Additionally, Hardware Sentry can be configured and used via the Monitoring Studio Web interface. Refer to the Configuring Hardware Sentry KM section for details.

Contrary to manufacturers’ monitoring tools, Hardware Sentry allows IT administrators to monitor their heterogeneous infrastructure into one single console. Because thresholds are automatically set according to the manufacturers’ recommendations and alarms triggered as soon as these thresholds are breached, hardware failures can be detected at an early stage, long before they impact business.

Should a failure occur, IT administrators need to rapidly identify the faulty component to be able to replace it in no time. To make this task easier, Hardware Sentry provides detailed information about each monitored component (vendor, model, serial number, part number, FRU number, location in the chassis, etc.). Full hardware health reports are also available and provide information about failures, their consequences and how to fix them.

Several reports can also be easily generated to be informed about, for example, the capacity of the monitored systems or the power consumption of all servers and storage devices.

Product Operation

Hardware Sentry mainly consists of:

  • A common hardware monitoring engine that runs on the PATROL Agent of each monitored computer.
  • Several connector files (MS_HW_*.hdf) that are platform-specific. Above 200 connectors are currently available to monitor almost any server on the market. They contain all commands, queries, and scripts required to collect information. Several connectors can be combined to collect as much information as possible.

Hardware Sentry Components

Hardware Sentry leverages one or several sources (manufacturer-specific hardware agents, standard management technologies, SSH, SNMP, WBEM, WMI, etc.) to gather hardware information and display it in the PATROL and TrueSight Consoles.
