Overview
What is IBM Spectrum Protect KM?
IBM Spectrum Protect KM is a standard Knowledge Module (KM) that enables you to monitor your IBM Spectrum Protect infrastructure in BMC TrueSight Operations Management or BMC Helix Operations Management.
Technically, IBM Spectrum Protect KM is composed of:
-
A KM for PATROL:
- Compatible with Linux, Windows, Solaris, HP-UX, and IBM AIX
- Deployable and configurable through TrueSight/Helix CMA
- Configurable through Monitoring Studio X Web UI
-
A Component for TrueSight Presentation Server (TSPS)
- Enables the configuration of IBM Spectrum Protect KM and facilitates the interaction with the PATROL Agent through the user-friendly Monitoring Studio X Web interface.
There are two possible options to setup IBM Spectrum Protect KM and the PATROL Agent:
- Remote Monitoring: Install the KM and the Agent on a dedicated managed node that monitors one or more IBM Spectrum Protect master and media servers remotely.
- Local Monitoring: Install the KM and the Agent on the IBM Spectrum Protect master and media servers directly to monitor locally.
Standard KM for PATROL
IBM Spectrum Protect KM monitors every component of IBM Spectrum Protect to ensure it runs efficiently 24 hours a day:
- Clients: status
- Daemons: processor utilization, memory size, number of processes found, and status
- Internal Server Processes: monitoring of database backups, data migration and space reclamations
- Jobs: size, duration, throughput, time elapsed since last backup, number of objects and status
- Libraries and Drives: number of available drives, status, and number of scratch volumes loaded, etc
- Server and Storage Agent Availability: status memory and CPU time consumption
- Server Database and Recovery Logs: database and file system utilization, cache and buffer performance, time elapsed since last backup and database reorganization, etc
- Storage Pools: space utilization, status, capacity, logical occupancy, growth rates, etc.
As a KM for PATROL, IBM Spectrum Protect KM runs natively on the BMC PATROL Agent. The monitored objects and metrics and their configuration are automatically integrated into the various BMC consoles:
- TrueSight Operations Management or Helix Operations Management
- TrueSight Central Monitoring Administration (CMA)
- TrueSight Infrastructure Management
- PATROL Console (Classic)
- PATROL Central - Windows Edition
- PATROL Central - Web Edition
Since IBM Spectrum Protect KM,
- detects backup and restore errors
- helps prevent backup system failures
- detects disk or tape space shortages
- helps identify bottlenecks and optimize the backup policies
it ensures maximum backup application availability and maximum data protection.
